Resin Bond Wheels

Sharp and versatile for precision finishing across multiple materials.

Resin bond wheels are produced using phenolic or polyimide resins with fine ceramic powders and fillers. Phenolic resins are the most widely used, offering reliable performance, while polyimide bonds provide higher wear resistance where longer life is required. The bond allows sharp cutting, efficient material removal, and adaptability for both wet and dry grinding. Resin bonds are especially valued for producing excellent surface finishes and for their versatility across different applications.

Characteristics / Features:

  • Sharp cutting action with self-dressing ability.
  • Supports wet and dry grinding modes.
  • Tailored performance by adjusting fillers for thermal and wear control.
  • Suitable for finish and medium-finish grinding.

Material Workpieces / Ideal For:

  • Diamond:
    • Tungsten carbide
    • Ceramics
    • Quartz
    • PCBN
    • Cermets
    • Natural diamond
  • CBN:
    • High-speed steel (HSS)
    • Stainless steels (SUS)
    • Die steels (SK, SCM)
    • Cast iron
    • Structural alloy steels
    • Abrasion-resistant steels

Applications:

  • Tool grinding (carbide drills, end mills, reamers).
  • Semiconductor wafer grinding and back-thinning.
  • Die and mold machining for hardened steels and ceramics.

Vitrified Bond Wheels

High rigidity and wear resistance with excellent form retention.

Vitrified bond wheels, often referred to as ceramic bonds, are made from high cohesive ceramic powders with engineered porosity. Compared to resin bonds, they offer greater bond strength, improved wear resistance, and superior ability to hold shape and profile. The open structure provides space for chips, improves coolant access, and prevents wheel loading. These features make vitrified bonds highly effective in mass-production grinding where consistent accuracy and long life are critical.

Characteristics / Features:

  • Strong ceramic bond structure.
  • Porous design for chip clearance and coolant flow.
  • Superior form and dimensional stability.
  • Excellent wear resistance and surface finish quality.

Material Workpieces / Ideal For:

  • Diamond:
    • PCD
    • PCBN
    • Tungsten carbide
    • Ceramics
    • Cermets
    • Quartz
    • Sapphire
    • Composites
    • Semiconductor materials
      (Si, GaAs)
  • CBN:
    • HSS
    • Die steels (SK, SCM, SNCM)
    • Bearing steels (SUJ)
    • Cutting tool steels
    • Abrasion-resistant steels

Applications

  • Automotive: camshafts, crankshafts, CV joints, gear grinding.
  • Bearing industry: bore and raceway grinding.
  • Aerospace: turbine blades, engine components and superalloy parts.
  • Tool and cutter grinding requiring high accuracy.

Metal Bond Wheels

Durable wheels designed for brittle and ultra-hard material machining.

Metal bond wheels use a metallic matrix, typically composed of cobalt, copper, nickel, or tin powders, to secure the abrasive grains. They provide exceptional grit retention, long tool life, and excellent form stability. Their durability makes them the preferred choice for machining brittle materials such as glass, ceramics, and ferrite, as well as for profile grinding where wheel shape must remain stable over long runs.

Characteristics / Features:

  • Very long service life and wear resistance.
  • Outstanding form-holding stability.
  • High precision in profile grinding.
  • Compatible with electrolytic and EDM-assisted processes.

Material Workpieces / Ideal For:

  • Diamond:
    • Glass
    • Quartz
    • Ferrite
    • Ceramics
    • Silicon
    • Germanium
    • Fireproof materials
    • Stone
  • CBN:
    • Cast iron
    • Hardened steels
    • Ceramic-coated ferrous alloys

Applications

  • Electronics: ferrite core and semiconductor wafer grinding.
  • Optics: glass lens and quartz machining, chamfering, profiling.
  • Automotive: honing cast iron components.
  • Precision engineering: precision grooving of hardened steels, form grinding.

Electroplated Bond Wheels

Maximum grit exposure for aggressive cutting and intricate shapes.

Electroplated bond wheels use nickel plating to secure a single abrasive layer with maximum grit protrusion. This design provides sharp cutting and high stock removal rates. Electroplated wheels are relatively simple to manufacture into complex or custom shapes, making them ideal for form grinding and applications requiring intricate profiles. Although their service life is shorter than resin, vitrified, or metal bonds, they can be replated for extended use.

Characteristics / Features:

  • Nickel bond with strong grit retention.
  • Sharp, aggressive cutting action.
  • High grit protrusion for maximum efficiency.
  • Suited for complex profiles and custom geometries.
  • Replating possible after wear.

Material Workpieces / Ideal For:

  • Diamond:
    • Carbide
    • Ceramics
    • Composites
    • Ferrite
    • Glass
    • Stone
  • CBN:
    • High-speed steels
    • Hardened steels
    • Ferrous alloys

Applications

  • Gear and spline grinding with profile requirements.
  • Semiconductor wafer slicing and dicing.
  • Optical lens and precision glass shaping.
  • Medical and dental tool production.

Hybrid Bond Wheels

Balanced bond system offering high efficiency and extended tool life.

Hybrid bond wheels integrate the benefits of resin and metal bonds. They combine resin’s sharpness with metal’s durability, resulting in higher removal rates, longer tool life, and improved chip evacuation. By adjusting the mix of resin, metal, and ceramic powders, hybrid bonds can be tailored for specific applications. They are widely used in CNC tool grinding, where productivity and dimensional stability are equally important.

Characteristics / Features:

  • Resin–metal synergy with balanced sharpness and durability.
  • Longer lifespan than resin bonds, sharper cutting than metal bonds.
  • Controlled chip evacuation and grinding forces.
  • Customizable structure for different applications.

  • Diamond:
    • Tungsten carbide
    • Cermets
    • Quartz
    • Glass
    • Sapphire
    • Ceramics
  • CBN:
    • HSS
    • SCM
    • SNCM
    • SUJ
    • Alloy steels

Applications

  • CNC tool grinding (ANCA, WALTER, EWAG, SCHNEEBERGER, SCHUTTE, HUFFMANN).
  • Cutting tool production (carbide, PCD, PCBN tools).
  • Aerospace and automotive high-precision parts.
  • Semiconductor wafer processing where long life is required.
